Arenal, Guanacaste, or the Central Pacific: Which One First?
The three most-searched first-trip regions, compared honestly.
These three regions come up in almost every "first time in Costa Rica" search, and each one delivers a genuinely different week. Here's how to pick without a decision-paralysis spiral.
Pick Arenal if you want activities stacked back to back
Zip-lining, hanging bridges, hot springs, waterfall hikes, and a volcano to look at from all of them — La Fortuna packs more bookable experiences per square kilometer than almost anywhere else in the country. It's the least beach-forward of the three.
Pick Guanacaste if the trip is a beach vacation with adventure on the side
This is the region for travelers who want reliable sun, a beach town base, and day trips inland when they feel like it — not the other way around. It's also the most resort-developed and the easiest for a group with mixed activity levels.
Pick the Central Pacific if you have limited time from San José
Manuel Antonio's combination of national-park rainforest and beach within a short run of the airport makes it the best choice when the whole trip is a week or less and you don't want to lose a day and a half to transfers each way.
Combining two of them
Arenal plus Guanacaste is the most popular first-timer combination — volcano-and-adventure days followed by beach days, connected by one transfer. Arenal plus the Central Pacific works on a tighter schedule since both are a manageable drive from San José without needing a domestic flight.
